Today I submitted my work for my Final Major Project. The bulk of the series is now shot too and what remains will slowly be released in the build-up to June 14th, which will be the first public day of viewing for the End of Year Arts Show at college.

Of course the exhibition is a huge thing with all visual arts students across Art and Design, Fine Art, Digital Media, Games Design, Photography and Fashion showcasing their work in some way. Being in my second and final year, we are actually assessed on our exhibition. As a result, I want this to be the primary output for my images even though only a selection of the set will be up. But I do also care about putting it up online and in a way have been trying to treat it in a similar manner to the exhibition. So, that’s why not everything will be available until the same time as the exhibition. It’ll also be then that I will add the title, description and other finishing touches to it.

It probably sounds like I’m merely making a mountain out of a mole-hill, but I truly want this to be something that I can be proud of and to be something that years down the line I can add to a list of my projects instead of simply brushing it aside saying “Oh yes, that was some of my early work. Nothing special, just something I did as a student.”

Even so, forgetting the FMP for a second I have already begun some work on my next project. Naturally I’m not going to just lay out my plans for it right now, but it’s very much in the works, albeit early stages indeed. But once it’s done, it’ll be out there. And it also will be something of a departure. I want to soon call it a day on experimenting with lights and torches while photographing at night. There might be a few more of those coming in the series tied in with Warning Sign, but not in the next project. I want to shift and move on, venturing into something new and seeing what concepts I can explore that I have yet to even go near.

I suppose in a rather fitting way to the working title of the FMP, the successor should be the Next Major Project.

Today consisted of a trip to London to visit a few exhibitions. Namely, the Deutche Borse Photography Prize 2013 at The Photographers Gallery and a selection of the works of the master of botanical Photography, Karl Blossfeldt.

The day was honestly brilliant with all too many great works being seen. If anything had to be a highlight, it was that many of the Blossfeldt photographs were original prints, some with various notation that Blossfeldt himself had written-on.

As well as all of this whilst at the Photographers Gallery I of course couldn’t help but not visit their marvelous shop. From the shop I finally bought myself a roll of magic, A.K.A Revolog Rasp. Sadly they didn’t have any Kolor in stock, so instead I chose my second most desired Revolog film. I cannot wait to shoot it. I may do so over the weekend!

Introducing: Felix Speller

Fellow Photographer and friend, Felix Speller is something of a photographic all-rounder, and I in no way mean that in a negative sense. Felix has dabbled in everything from music promotion, to architecture, studio, portrait and now, Fine Art.

Whilst my own Final Major Project is within the realm of Fine Art, Felix’s takes a different angle within the pathway. Peripherals explores beauty in the small things we tend to otherwise overlook.

It is currently available to be viewed on his Tumblr as well as more up on his Flickr and website.

Overall, Felix is yet another brilliant creative individual that I have been able to work along-side at college. On top of this, whilst it is something that is a little outside of my nature, I would kindly ask if it you would possibly be able to cast a vote to help him out.

He has entered the EXPOSURE Competition, which is associated with Aperture Magazine. This will undoubtedly be a help to his own exposure, but the overall prize is even greater, with the chance to be able to have a solo show in New York City. His EXPOSURE page can be found here along with his submitted photograph, Peripherals Part IX. To be able to cast a vote you must first however sign up, although it is incredibly simple and takes less than a minute.

Warning Sign

I was so incredibly pleased to finally get this shot. In truth, I hadn’t even planned to do it this evening, or even at that location. I was actually doing a test for a shoot that will be happening later in the week when I came across this spot.

As soon as I saw it I was drawn to it. The atmosphere and feel of the location was the exact same as I had originally intended, although the lighting far different.

Still, I’m overjoyed to have gotten it and considering completing the set I had envisioned this to be a part of. Maybe I’ll let it be a long-term project.

A huge thank you to negativelightsfor the edit. It honestly means a lot. Whilst I may have certain aspirations for the future at the moment I think I’m just another Photographer really. One in a seemingly endless ocean of others, yet someone has seen potential and taken interest in my work.

Every time one of my photographs is viewed, liked or anything at all it means a great deal to me. The Unknown recently finished a surge in views, peaking at 485. That is spectacular. I feel I owe it to everyone who has helped with this to say thank you . To everyone who follows me on here, add me as a contact on Flickr, reblogged or liked an image.

Moving back to the edit though, thanks again to negativelights. I highly recommend you check out his work. It reminds me very much of the work of Robert Brook. Incredibly powerful work of urban environments at night.

I would also like to quickly say that I am more than happy for Slant to have been edited, partially because I was still credited (something that I deem acceptable when reposting content without directly asking for permission, as opposed to reblogging) but also because it was one of a few direct to Tumblr uploads, rather than something from an external link. I would ask that image with the title as a hyperlink is kindly left be, however all other content of mine I am open to varying degrees of use.

So, thank you everybody for everything. Expect more additions to the series very seen indeed.

Recently I have been searching for inspiration by indulging in pastimes I normally otherwise wouldn’t or don’t regularly, such as having re-watched various films, going places I haven’t in while and varying my playlist a bit more.

While digging through my cupboard last night I came across Oxygene. I probably hadn’t listened to it for about four years and when I noticed it, couldn’t wait to do so again. If I am correct (although my dad will debate me on this) Oxygene Part IV was featured on one of the original releases of Lemmings, a game I first played when I was just three.It undoubtedly stuck in my mind and wasn’t until years later that I encountered it again.

i was nine that I studied the album in a school music lesson. It was the first time I heard the album in it’s entirety and wasn’t I was too young to understand music composition or theory, I felt I strong sense of emotion from the music.

Listening through it again yesterday was amazing. Following that listening through Oxygene 7 -13 (which I never knew of until last night) this morning was also an experience.

So, as for Part IV, I would suggest to plug in headphones, close your eyes and let the music do its magic.

Critique and Contrivence

In today’s class we concluded our critique with the final few people, myself included. I am so grateful for the feedback I got with it all being constructive and most certainly helpful.

The main thing that I think it highlighted that my vision of the project showing a large over-arching story isn’t quite flowing that well. There’s a few small elements that I need to nail down as well as making sure that I clearly define the relationship between the mysterious thing and any models in the scenes.

Beyond that I had something close to an epiphany with one of the two new photographs I mentioned suddenly hitting me. The way I envisioned it there will definitely be what I’ll aim for and I don’t want to go for anything less. Not sure when I’ll do it as I still have one crucial component to suss out. After that however, I just need a free evening, fair weather and a model.
